Winter Tips For Snowshoeing From Onion River Outdoors

Technology has come a long way since the days of romping around the woods with big, tennis racquet - shaped, wooden snowshoes strapped to your feet. Today, companies offer a wide variety of snowshoes for all abilities, from beginners to experienced mountaineers.

Many factors affect the price and performance of a pair of snowshoes. One is the location of the traction. Having traction and grippers built right into the frame can increase stability and efficiency, especially when you encounter obstacles while in your snowshoes. Traction on the frame can also save weight, keeping you out on the trails longer.

The binding is another factor to consider when choosing snowshoes. Some have an adjustable dial for simple tightening and loosening without having to take your gloves off.  Others use ratchets or straps that are easily replaced when deep in the backcountry.

Size and shape determine maneuverability and how much float you have in deep snow. People carrying gear will want more surface area to ensure they stay above the snow, while a runner may want a more minimal profile.

Whatever your needs are, there is a snowshoe out there for you. At Onion River Outdoors we have a wide selection to choose from, and an experienced, knowledgeable staff to help you discover which shoe best matches your winter activities.  or stop by and say hi…20 Langdon Street Montpelier, Vt.
